Having studied under renowned performer and teacher Roy Poper at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Alex has a well-rounded musical education with skills in sight-reading, solo and orchestral performance, jazz improvisation, and more. Alex performs regularly with the Pasadena Community Orchestra, the Symphony of the Verdugos, the Southern California Brass Consortium, and at churches and other venues. Alex is a member of The Bread Quintet, a professional brass quintet based in the Los Angeles area, which has given multiple performances.
Teaching
Alex models his teaching around the respected “James Stamp” school of pedagogy espoused by Roy Poper, which has an emphasis on strong fundamental skills such as breathing work, mouthpiece buzzing, ear training, and progressive routines. Alex integrates this philosophy with a music-driven approach from the “Arnold Jacobs” school of pedagogy (“if you can sing it, you can play it”). With these two driving principles of solid technical foundation/versatility and a powerful commitment to musicality, Alex is able to effectively help students at any age or level. Alex also teaches music theory and jazz improvisation, and integrates both concepts with many students, believing that knowing more about these skills is paramount to becoming a confident musician in any style. Alex has taught students aged 6-65, and makes sure each student is supported and adequately challenged in their musical development.
Whistling and Singing
As a whistler, Alex has a successful TikTok page where he shares creative projects, mostly focused on a capella arrangements and covers of the music of J.S. Bach. Alex has given lessons on whistling and posts popular tutorials on his TikTok. Alex has also competed in the World Whistling Competition and placed in the top 15 globally. Alex has whistled for gigs and can improvise and perform whistling in many styles. Please see links and media page for more information.
Alex has also worked as a singer in choral settings and has an interest in pops vocal performance. Alex has experience teaching singing, with a focus on ear training and ease of vocal tone production.
